The End of Lottery?

“I am today starting the process of terminating the diversity lottery program,” he said. “I am going to ask Congress to immediately initiate work to get rid of this program.”

Why, why does it have to be Trump to take a stand against this abomination? It was created by Bush, for Pete’s sake. Bush! It should have been a Dem issue. Nobody likes the lottery. You can’t possibly lose by attacking it. It should have been named “the Bush lottery” and used to trounce Republicans.

  1. Dropping the lottery is not as much of a hot-button issue for me as it is for you, and I suspect that’s the case for most people. First, it’s only about 5% of green cards, which is a drop in the bucket. Second, there are still some minimum qualifications (like equivalent to a high school education, 2 years working in a position which requires at least 2 years of training, etc.). While I’m sure this sort of stuff can be faked, and these aren’t the highest skilled workers for sure, they shouldn’t be useless people either – poor Americans are rather picky about what sort of jobs they will take. And of course the lottery winners go through the usual security clearance stuff, so it won’t really address folks “security concerns” either.

I agree you don’t loose much of anything politically by attacking it, but for most liberal folks who aren’t immigrants, calling it an abomination is an overstatement.

      • Do you know how much it costs to buy a high school diploma in, say, Uzbekistan? I suspect not much at all.

      • Do you know how cheap it is to buy a paper back in the former USSR or elsewhere certifying that you have no criminal record?

      • I’ve seen people who have been destroyed by this, families torn apart, so I feel their pain. As for overstatement, it seems to work very well in a political context these days.
