BB Grading Center

The only criticism of my teaching I get from the students is that I don’t place grades on Blackboard. So ok, I’m always in favor of granting reasonable requests. I looked up a YouTube video and learned how to use the Blackboard grading center.

Now I have two questions, and I’m hoping that those who are more familiar with the system can help.

1. Students only see their own grades, right? They don’t see everybody’s, do they?

2. It feels a little passive-aggressive instead of telling somebody in person “look, I need you to speak more in class because we have a high participation grade, and right now I don’t have much to go on to grade your participation” just to plop it into the system and hope that people take the hint. Am I worrying over nothing and this is just a new style of communication?

You can still tell them things like that in person. It’s probably a good idea to do both; not everyone checks blackboard.

  2. Is there any reason you hadn’t been posting grades online before? I’ve been doing it so long that I just assumed that it was a near universal practice.

I personally think it’s one of the best uses of technology since I started teaching. No one ever turns up surprised about their grade at the end of the semester and I have seen students work harder when they realize that they are near the top of a grade range and could move up to the next one with just a little more effort.

    1. I have a very literal mind. Nobody ever said to me that I should do it. And I never gave it any thought. I never give any thought to most things. People would be shocked if they had any idea.

I wonder if there’s anything else like this that I should know.

  3. I post on Blackboard for a few reasons: It’s an easy way to have a backup (I also keep a spreadsheet of grades on my laptop), it reduces the number of emails I get asking “What is my grade?”, and on the off chance that my records are wrong they can see it and tell me that I marked this number on their assignment buy recorded a different number on Blackboard.

They only see their own grades. If you decide you’re going to access materials uploaded to blackboard and you’re signed in as yourself and you have a projector on your computer people might see more than just your grade if you’re not careful.

I don’t think most people would take the hint the grade is low if they see it in blackboard and then act on it. But you’d probably get less questions and more “oh crap the system didn’t update yet!”

  5. In my school’s version of blackboard you can leave “quick comments “ on numerical grades, though not all students read them. I set up a column to automatically calculate their overall grade too, so no surprises and easy for me at the end.
