Misguided Compliments

A younger person told me today that she admires me. That was the first time ever that I felt old.

At least, nobody has told me yet that I don’t look my age. That would be a real old person thing to happen.

  1. In India there’s this seemingly overnight transition where kids in your neighborhood start calling you uncle or aunty which is a generic term for anyone of a certain age who’s not family, instead of bhaiya (older brother) or didi (older sister). You wonder how this happens. Do they have a closed door meeting to decide you’re gonna be called uncle now?

  2. Whenever I tell someone how old I am, I always hope to hear “Really? You don’t look that old!” Unfortunately, that almost never happens. The only time I recall hearing it was from a perky little hairdresser who was cutting my hair… but she may have just been angling for a larger tip. She got it, too.
