Elites Are Better

We keep hearing how our elites are bad, and yes, they aren’t exactly amazing. But they are better than normies. Normies not only get what they deserve, they get better than what they deserve.

By now journalists and even celebrities have found the courage to say openly that Biden is unwell. Normies are still in complete denial. They are refusing to recognize what they have seen with their own eyes and are aggressively manufacturing fantasies about how the press is pro-Trump (I know, right?) and how celebrities reject Biden because they are “rich white men.” Their pouty, combative faces when you gently tell them, “you saw the debate, didn’t you? You know what you saw?” are sad to observe.

Once again, my observation is completely non-partisan. It’s a very rare human being that can let fresh evidence seep through the overpowering need not to learn anything new. People will mostly just repeat whatever easy platitude they learned first and reject absolutely any evidence no matter how strong.

  1. The press… is pro Trump…?

Gonna go with “normies” as “people you know” here. Even my inlaws, who are incurable CNN-watching white-collar liberals, have finally figured out that Biden would be better off at home with dementia-care nurses and are miffed that nobody can seem to run anybody else. We agree on nothing political, but I said this week that I’d love to see BOTH parties run people I’ve never seen or heard of before, who are under sixty, and my MIL agreed wholeheartedly. Disgusted with the whole scene.

So maybe there’s hope for the world after all.

    1. It’s every single person I know in RL plus 100% of what I see on social media. Depressing in the extreme. People are rejecting “the evidence of their lying eyes” because correcting a preconceived notion is too painful. It’s very sad.

      1. oof.

It’s the Twain thing, right– it’s easy to fool someone, hard to convince him he’s been fooled…

It helps that my MIL used to work in a nursing home. The one thing CNN’s not going to override is her elder-care expertise…

        1. …granted, the only reason she’s willing to go against CNN on this, is because she’s deeply (said it out loud even!) afraid that because the D side can’t run anyone who isn’t pathetic or loathsome, that Trump will surely win.

I think by ‘normie’ maybe Clarissa is thinking PMC…. real normies are more like your MIL. Even if they don’t have work experience in a nursing home they or someone they know has had to deal with a older relative with some degree of dementia and they know the signs and know they have to deal with it.

It’s the PMC that upon hearing a relative is starting to slip hires an undocumented elder-nanny or ships them off to a care home while sparing them no further thought.

      2. People on social media aren’t normal tbh. It attracts the most mentally ill Americans. Irl, my experience has been more like methyethyl’s.

What disturbs me from both media people and rank and file voters alike is how emphatic many of them are about how they’ll still vote for Biden even if he’s brain dead and in a coma. They seem to think it’s something to be proud of. This is specifically a phenomenon among people who accept that Biden is unwell.

        1. I mean my social media. People I know in real life. Colleagues, friends. And they all are completely convinced that Biden’s health problems are a fabrication. This is scaring me because it’s not an issue of a difference of opinion. I’m fine with the difference of opinion. But people are adamantly denying that Biden had trouble finishing his sentences and walking off the stage. They say it never happened.

          1. The media has been pumping the message for years that any doubts about Biden’s health are dishonest right wing propaganda. Now people who actually watch and believe the news (poor souls) are unable to switch tracks; they’ve effectively been inoculated against this information.

People very plugged into media tend towards being older and, perhaps most crucially when it comes to understanding our different experiences, more educated. My coworkers only faintly keep up with the news so on the rare occasion politics comes up, they had no issue noticing that Biden is too old even before the debate (or that inflation is bad, etc.) As far as I know I’m the only Republican in my workplace.

              1. I think some level of solidity here is healthy; many people turn on a dime in a way that disturbs me. Here unfortunately this solidity is being deployed inappropriately. Another example: people who held to insane COVID restrictions even longer than the CDC did.

While not being dismissive of the reality, the same principle applies with people you know. The crazy people are absolutely real, but relatively normal people have retreated entirely from posting on social media, providing a skewed view of the consensus.

Normal people retreating from politics is a big reason things are the way they are, of course.

  2. I get where you’re coming from and I agree. But the problem is that the current elite is not the same as the old elite. The old elite (say until the 60s or so) had a sense of noblesse oblige. They were interested in maintaining order, and perpetuating the values that made america great. Maybe the current elite know something about the trajectory of the american empire that we don’t but they seem to be behaving as if this is the end, and are fully engaged in rent-extraction, looting the country through weird finance tricks, letting public education rot, and our infrastructure go to shit. Can we say america has become better in any dimension over the last 30 years?

These people were given a country that was truly #1 and they turned it into the mess it is today. For that reason I refuse to call them elite. Sure, they have fake email jobs that pay a lot of money but it’s all bullshit. The previous elite sent a rocket to the moon using math done with pencil and paper and with fucking slide rules. The clowns in charge these days can’t even build a floating pier in Gaza that doesn’t cost $350 and breaks apart in one week.

I demand to be ruled by a elite that it worthy of the that title. Not these jokers.

        1. Have you guys read Christopher Lasch’s The Revolt of the Elites and the Betrayal of Democracy? Much of my rant was inspired by that book. 🙂
