Biden Withdraws

OK, so now what? The DEI veep will run? Somebody else entirely? Dusting off Hillary, maybe?

They should run Newsom/Whitmer. It’d let them dump both from any future roster.

Imagine bypassing Kamala for 2 white people. That would be a circus for the ages.

Biden has endorsed Kamala, I think his delegates are likely to respect that. I think it’s a good choice; might as well sacrifice her on a doomed election and not have to deal with her in 2028.

No, I have a better one. Kamala / Stacey Abrams. That would be the real winner.

The right thing to do would be to resign. If he’s not competent to run, he’s not competent to rule. I’m not complaining though; do we really want Kamala Harris to be president for the next 6 months?

The rumor I heard is Harris/Cooper. Cooper and Harris know each other relatively well and he is a current governor of NC.

yes, that is the downside of Cooper – people outside of NC don’t know him. The thinking is that she needs someone who will not overshadow her, so less known is good. Also, since there is a previous relationship it may be easier for her to work with him. Finally, Cooper won election to for governor in NC while the voters voted for Trump over Biden, so he has some appeal for swing voters. But have seen this theory being floated even before Biden resigned, so I think it has some credibility. In any case, she will likely be choosing from several options. But do not think she will pick someone super well known, like Hillary or Michele Obama.

I don’t think she’ll have the cream of the crop to choose from. Who wants to jump aboard a sinking ship? People keep floating big names with big futures but those people are going to wait until 2028. Cooper would be among her best options, and a realistic one since his governorship is winding to an end anyway and he has nothing to lose by this. If she’s less likely she’ll be running with Buttigieg lol (the American people know who he is but they wish they didn’t.)

Remember 4 weeks ago, any talk of Biden’s mental state was right-wing misinformation.

Obama and Pelosi not endorsing Kamala. I guess it makes sense. You don’t take the step of staging a palace coup in order to install a more retarded candidate lol.

Kamala reminds me of the quote from Byung Chul Han you posted a few weeks ago. A smooth-brained individual with nothing she feels strongly about, nothing that anyone can point to as her signature issue. A completely empty vessel into which the dem establishment can pour the fruits of their deliberations.

Also, it’s embarrassing that this news was given to us by Biden’s staff who control his account. This was not a video message or a press conference. A letter that we’re almost sure he didn’t write himself.

Also, a big LOL at the ‘democratic process’. The 3rd primary in a row that the dem establishment has intervened in to get their favored candidate installed.

Obnoxious post, Clarissa. Republicans are going with similar lines, that KH was a “DEI hire.”

Kamala Harris was not *hired* as Attorney General, Senator, or Vice President. She was *elected*. She is not a bureaucrat. She is an elected official. Voters don’t follow DEI guidelines that many universities, for example, have to.

Joe Biden said himself very openly that he was going to choose a black woman as a running mate. Harris did atrociously in the 2020 primaries and has to drop out. Voters wanted Biden (or, rather, an alternative to Trump) and accepted Harris as part of the package.

You cannot deny, however, that she was extremely unpopular with Dem voters in 2020 and that Biden insisted that he chose her for DEI reasons.

Biden “was extremely unpopular with Dem voters in 2008” and Obama selected him for his VP to supplement Obama’s own (in)experience.

If you can show that Biden “insisted that he chose her for DEI reasons,” let me know. Maybe you are playing around with vague wording here, because Biden certainly did *not* say he “chose” Harris “for DEI reasons.” I was paying close attention.

I don’t have a dog in this race, just loathe sloppy accusations.

“Biden, who spent eight years as President Barack Obama’s vice president, has spent months weighing who would fill that same role in his White House. He pledged in March to select a woman as his vice president, easing frustration among Democrats that the presidential race would center on two white men in their 70s.”

“Harris’s selection is the latest sign of the increasing diversity of the Democratic Party. Democrats last had an all-white, all-male ticket in 2004, with then Sens. John Kerry and John Edwards. This vice presidential process, with Biden committing to choosing a woman fairly early on and then choosing a Black woman, suggests the Democrats”

      https://fivethirtyeight.com/features/kamala-harris-biden-vice-president/

“Here are 13 women who have been under consideration by Mr. Biden…”

There are dozens of links, all repeating the same thing. Biden said he was going to choose based on immutable characteristics. A woman. A black person. That’s the definition of DEI.

If Obama has said he was dedicated to choosing a male veep, we’d all have conniption fits. Biden, however, said that he was only considering women. And that’s ok because it’s DEI.

    Please.

DEI is a *hiring* rubric. It is a *bureaucratic* process. Selecting a running mate is a *political* *choice*. This should not be hard to understand.

If you want to smear voters with your complaint against DEI bureaucracies, just say so. Then tell the people who vote how much you loathe THEM.

When we say “a DEI hire” we mean “a person chosen for a job based on race or sex”. That’s what people who are using this expression in regards to Harris mean by it.

It’s always good to clarify terminology before a discussion and I’m glad we have done so. There’s nothing sinister in people saying that she’s a DEI hire. This is simply shorthand for how Biden himself described the selection process.

    You are so close.

KH was not “chosen for a job” by a person or a bureaucracy. She was selected to *run* for a political position by Biden, who could not of course INSTALL her in that job. The voters chose her to install her in that position.

She was not hired. She was elected.

You are exactly wrong in this. Popular vote is the opposite of bureaucratic DEI selection processes and protocol – unless you choose to loathe and infantilize the population that votes.

Let’s say, then, that she was selected to run for DEI reasons. Fair enough?

No. DEI is a bureaucratic requirement, which elections completely evade.

I have written elsewhere: “DEI guidelines tend toward the ambiguous, embracing ever-evolving nomenclatures, making them problematic by design and pernicious when opportunity arises.”

Voters can attack those nomenclatures when bureaucracies don’t.

It is therefore wrong to say that KH is a DEI candidate. The opposite is true, said her voters.

I understand that this is your definition and I respect that. But I’m simply pointing out that when people say she’s a DEI hire, they mean very specifically these statements by Biden about his criteria for his choice.

As for the voters’ decision, nobody was going to switch to Trump because of Biden’s veep pick. This was a very polarized election, and I can’t imagine anybody who saw it as a referendum on Harris. Dem voters accepted her because it was that or Trump.

        Here’s a real-life example.

The Provost says, “There’s a hiring freeze. The only hire we will allow is a cluster hire in program X that serves our anti-racist goals.”

Theoretically, we can say no to limiting the candidate pool to black applicants. But then nobody gets hired, and program X can’t function. So we agree to avoid the collapse of the program. We conduct the hiring process willingly.

Is this going to be a DEI hire or not?

Or look at how Justice Ketanji Jackson was selected. Right off the bat, Biden limited the pool of applicants by literally specifying that he was looking for a black woman. Can we call this a DEI hire?

He could’ve said he was looking for the best judge in the land and if it happened to be a black woman, even better. But no. The search started and ended at “black woman.” I’m sure that inspires a lot of confidence in that institution.
