It’s curious that shutting down the economy during COVID wasn’t supposed to hurt the economy. But calling cartels with a magic word can hurt the economy. 

Liberals just can’t move on from their belief that words remake reality. They are stuck on it, unable to notice that there’s actual reality and that it’s completely resistant to words.

Trump is already in the White House, and they still aren’t figuring things out. Their sincere confusion – “but we said he’s a Nazi! Why didn’t it make any difference? We said many times that Bidenomics worked and that Kamala had the perfect campaign. Why did nobody care?” – is painful to watch.

    Remember that thing, years and years ago now, where lefties decided to take some rando politician nobody remembers now, and make his name synonymous with some gross poop/sex thing? That didn’t work either. I think at least partly because you have to be some kind of pervert to even *need* a word for that– for some reason these people are totally convinced the general public shares all their weird obsessions. Nobody remembers the politician. But a fair number of us remember that these people seemed to have an unhealthy interest in excrement.

    Anyway, they’ve been attempting the ‘magic words’ magic spell with the magic wands at their magic cauldrons ever since: if we can make the news say it, if we can get it printed on the official form, if we can make you repeat it, it becomes REAL! Nevermind that it didn’t work the last 50 times and causes rather a lot of backlash. Maybe if you just believe it hard enough…

      Santorum! Some of us remember. As for it not working, it kind of depends how you look at the big picture. Rick Santorum lost his bid for a third term in the senate, and he unsuccessfully ran for president twice–no, not necessarily because of the prank, but it served as a good illustration of protesting for a deadly serious cause with a sense of playfulness and outrageousness. And as long as people are convinced that they can preach love through hatred, we need some playfulness and outrageousness (with or without the scatological element).

          Oh, there’s probably none, now–clout is ephemeral, as are pranks and stunts. Advice columnist and activist Dan Savage had a specific stunt in mind with a specific target, and the moment Santorum was obliged to answer questions from reporters about what he thought of the new “definition” of his name, the stunt worked.

          Stunts and pranks, especially puerile ones–might be worth looking into. I hear some folks are already having fun with Trump’s government employee DEI snitch hotline, naming Trump and Vance as the biggest violators because they got their jobs without qualifications, solely on their race, and at least one is a convicted felon.

          It’ll be a bumpy four years to be sure, but there might be some fun to be had.

            Men will stop raping women in female jails. That’s great fun already. Especially for the women who now will not be raped. We can concentrate on that or we can go on about bored people doing entitled things like the ones you describe.

            As for Trump getting his job “without qualifications”, what better qualification to be president of the US can there be than already having held that job? Vance was previously a senator. How is that not a qualification to be elected VP? How is Vance’s race different from Kamala’s intended VP? This makes no sense at all.

            The Left truly can’t meme or make jokes. This “fun” isn’t funny. It’s kind of aping the other side’s points without even trying to understand them. You really need to try hard to not be able to make a funny joke about Trump but the left is succeeding daily at this task.

          Nothing much, I think. I remembered it was Dan Savage who led that campaign in response to Santorum comparing homosexuality to incest and bestiality…

          Long ago I used to read his column which could be very funny but I hadn’t thought of Savage in probably over 10 years so I checked his wikipedia page and not much is different.

            You know, at the time of that stunt, the comparison seemed gross and uncalled for.

            After the last several years of political activism on the “all sexual kinks should be normalized and marketed to all ages” front… he’s looking prescient.

    It is impolite to point this out but the reality problem is largely gender, and worse, it may well be the result of inherited traits. The concerns in America are the same as those in Canada, also Europe, and Asia. Trump won, but not by a huge margin. This battle will not be over until illegal aliens are sent back with any future employers facing significant penalties. The former will require controlling public compassion/maternal instinct. People must come to understand that deliberately undermining the wages of your fellow citizens not only hurt them, but also their spouses and their children.
