Prestige media has played a huge role in this whole genderslop phenomenon. Here’s how it goes: in nearly every case, the underlying issue is a specific interpersonal or relationship problem but you can’t pitch that to places like The New Yorker (because that would be a Dear Abby column, not a Serious Article). So the writer reframes it as some big structural problem, turning it into An Important Societal Issue about how all men/women are terrible. You see, now it becomes worthy of analysis. Then people read it and think “OMG that’s 100% my husband!!” and it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Yes, because they are men. Your husband is not your girlfriend. You really don’t want him to be your girlfriend. But the pouting continues because it’s a time hallowed tradition.
