Have you guys ever been in a situation where you start having imposter syndrome because everybody around you feels massively sorry for you and you don’t know why?

I’ve already had 3 people here at the conference come up to me to express compassion and solidarity for me in my plight. People are hugging me, patting me on the shoulder, and asking how I am surviving in the terrible America of Trump. And I’m sitting there in my Camper shoes and my Lola Casademunt jewelry, feeling like some sort of an unwitting fraud.

It is kind of funny as when people hear I lived in the US while Trump was president, they ask “Was it very hard? Because it sounds terrible to live in the US with Trump”. I answer with glee that most of the local people were Trump supporters, and even democrats had voted for him last time. And that they were lovely people. Because people just want to live a good, safe life and get on with it without everyone having to be defined by politicians.

One cannot reduce a whole country to its president, whether good or bad.

That’s a great point, actually. I’m not grabbing my Spanish colleagues by the arm and asking them in a concerned voice how they are surviving in the Spain of the terrible Pedro Sanchez.

People have the weirdest reaction to Trump. It’s something at a level that I will never understand.

I mean, he is a very uncouth and larger than life character.

Yea, we had something similar to this. I have an aunt who is Japanese. Her source of news of America comes straight from CNN and MSNBC. So it is always kind of amusing when she comes to America for Christmas and she asks about something she had heard about from the news only to find out how badly it was misconstrued or simply outright lied about from the mainstream media.

Frankly why anyone trusts them with anything at this point is a mystery.

I experience this with my own mother, who lives in Canada. Sometimes the news she relates to me about the U.S. is so bizarre and not based even marginally on anything that is actually happening that I get really confused.

I once had a European tell me he liked SA because the Boers fought the English. I wasn’t sure how to respond since my family all supported the empire.

Did you see Tucker Carlson’s interview with a South African farmer? It’s the most recent episode. Is that a real person? You never know with Tucker. Does the story ring true to you as somebody from the country?

The story is probably true. One of the big trends is that after Afrikaners lost political power they doubled down on NGOs and lobbying, which is why you are always going to hear their story.
