Political Relatives

If it’s OK to give political influence to a wife, why is it not OK to give it to a daughter? Or a son-in-law? If it’s OK to have a foundation that benefits from your political power, then why is it not OK to have a company that does it?

This is why I kept harping that Hillary’s greatest disadvantage was getting into politics as a wife. That’s why I keep saying that Michelle Obama should never run for office. Once you populate the seats of power with wives and their foundations, all sorts of relatives with their business entities will follow.

We don’t have a high moral ground here to object to all of these Ivankas-Melankas and their extended families polluting the political process. We participated eagerly when it was convenient.

Neoliberal

I wish people didn’t use words they don’t fully understand. It makes as much sense to say that “Trump isn’t neoliberal” as it is to declare that I’m not postmodern. You can’t decide on an individual basis to be outside the system you inhabit. And by the way, believing you can comes from a postmodern neoliberal mentality.

Who’s a Moocher Now?

I know everybody hates the posts with quotes, so I promise to dial it down a bit. But this one is just too good:

According to the Brookings analysis, the less-than-500 counties that Clinton won nationwide combined to generate 64 percent of America’s economic activity in 2015. The more-than-2,600 counties that Trump won combined to generate 36 percent of the country’s economic activity last year. Clinton, in other words, carried nearly two-thirds of the American economy.

Some people are busy working, while others are busy being bored. So they try to shake it up by electing clowns. And that’s why they hated the hard-working Hillary and identified with the lazy layabout Trump.

Hopes for 2018

At least, I hope that Illinois Democrats will get their shit together by 2018 to reelect Rauner. One would think that it should be easier than 1, 2, 3 to unseat a fucker that has kept the state without a budget since the beginning of his tenure. But you know Democrats. There is no sure-thing election that they are incapable of losing in a landslide.

Choice of Location

This is why those of us who have chosen to build a life of teaching and discovery in a small college town need to be more vocal about the reasons behind this choice.

Choice, eh? What lies wouldn’t people tell themselves to feel better. Like academics ever get to choose where they live.

Trump’s Popularity

President-elect Donald Trump exploded at media bigs in an off-the-record Trump Tower powow on Monday, sources told The Post. “It was like a f—ing firing squad,” said one source. “Trump started with Jeff Zucker and said I hate your network, everyone at CNN is a liar and you should be ashamed…

And that’s why Trump will be popular. Because who doesn’t hate these smug, useless fuckers?

Barronelle

The Washington State florist went to the Supreme Court last week, by the way. We don’t hear about the enormous impact her story has had on this year’s election nearly often enough. There’s real rage and real anxiety attached to this story for a great number of people.

The National Latino Christian Caucus is on Barronelle’s side, by the way. Talking about the Latino vote, this is what gets Latinos on your side, and not the dumb Latinx thing.

Prediction

Democrats have not been able to sell the dramatic improvement of the economy under Obama as their great achievement. But Trump will manage to sell Obama’s results as the product of his own financial genius. And the voters will buy it because it’s all about marketing.

France Is Screwed

France is screwed no matter what. Both candidates get off on bashing Islam, fellating Putin, and celebrating austerity.

It’s pathetic, that’s what it is.
