Finally, somebody is as outraged about the China-related apologism I see everywhere as I am.
Shopping as research and cooking as writing.
Among all the posts I read around the Remembrance Day, this one was absolutely the best.
A journalist from Kentucky explains why Senator McConnell needs to go and I agree with her.
“Does Quebec have short-man syndrome?” It’s an interesting post, although I have no idea why it singles out men. Everybody in Quebec is shorter and skinnier, irrespective of gender. With my 5’6”, I always felt like a giraffe, towering over everybody on Montreal buses.
Anti-choicers murder a woman. This is how “pro-life” these vile freakazoids are. Tell me once again how I’m too cruel when these anti-choice freaks come by my blog. They promote murder of women, and I get criticized for telling them they are vicious animals.
There is a lot of stupid dating advice out there but this article is too stupid for words. For those who don;t want to waste their time on it, I can summarize: “Ladies, sit there like stupid idiots and expect to be courted, pursued, begged, etc. God forbid you show any initiative in a relationship because then you will not be ladies any longer.” Barf.
Plagiarism as cross-contamination.
An interesting prognosis for China: “The next five years will evidence tight central political control, high levels of repression, increasing military threats to China’s neighbors, and slowing economic growth. The consequence may be coup d’etat or revolution come 2017.”
And the title of the post of the week goes to: “I adore writing! I want to marry writing, have wild sex with it, make it have my babies, wrap myself in that zone only writing can offer for hours and hours. It’s a chronic disease, that writing desire.”
An election memory involving 1988 and my dad.
Where I think it will be a fun idea to hike up the side of a mountain.
Alfred Hitchcock Presents: Salvage — Looking at an episode of the 1950s TV show where a woman seeks help for violence she fears will be committed against her.

In the third link from the top the author asks at one point why people are so adamant about not recognizing evil or error even when faced with tons of evidence. I’m currently reading Mistakes Were Made But Not By Me, a book that begins to answer that question, and I write about it here: http://brightacrossthelifespan.com/2012/11/18/defending-even-our-worst-ideas/

Hm, the post on Alice Miller: I love Alice Miller and all, but I object to the idea of deciding that everything you think is wrong. It is what my parents always used on me, and my psychotherapist too. It is really destructive. I really think people should also allow themselves to consider where they might be right.
The post on dating: if you are dating Republicans and so on, or Southerners, I would endorse this post. I do not see it as recommending passivity. It is just saying to watch for poor behavior and not get manipulated by it.

From the Alice Miller article: “As far as I know, not a single ideology has “appropriated” the truth of the overriding importance of our early conditioning to be obedient and dependent and to suppress our feelings, along with the consequences of this conditioning. ”
The issue being addressed is authoritarianism and how this is instilled in a child from an early age.
Actually, in my view, one is an authoritarian by virtue of one’s human nature, and one’s parents can either exacerbate this, or channel it through beneficial paths. The issue of human authoritarianism can also be tackled via intellectual shamanizing. We are all naturally driven to climb a summit in order to prove ourselves to both ourselves and others. Bataille says, the summit is not the only path for experience. In fact, there is nothing on top of the summit. Nothing. God is an illusion. So we may choose to go elsewhere, apart from ascending the summit.

The most insane part of the dating post was the idea that favours like picking someone up from the airport should be reserved for partners. I can’t count the number of times my family has picked up friends (not family or partners) from the airport (I don’t have a driving licence or else I would too) or done similar favours. Should I limit all my niceness to partners? Better hope they don’t break up with me or else I’ll be left friendless.
Passivity only hurts your chances at dating someone good for you, this just sounds like it would fuck up your entire life.
(Though I agree with Z re. that it also contains some useful/sensible points.)

In my very recent visit to Germany, I could observe that fair-haired German-speaking kids outnumber the dark-haired kids by far. 🙂
Germans do have a historic tendency to feel persecuted by dark-haired folks, as I’m sure you are well-aware.

You’ve said many times that each person has 100% rights on his body (abortion, suicide, etc), so I wondered what you would think of the new law in Ukraine:

Gosh, compared to other nasty things that the Rada does, this one is not the worst. What they could have done if they actually respected their citizens would be to get everybody to mark a yes or no box when one gets one’s passport renewed, for example. That would take all of 5 seconds. But you need to respect the citizens for that, of course.
