Blogging Question

I have a feeling people only read those posts that are published between 6 and 9 am. Is that true? Do people read blogs with their morning coffee and then move on to other things?

I’m usually asleep between 6 and 9 am but I can schedule for all posts to appear only between those hours if that helps.

Also, when do you normally wake up? Is it normal that I sleep until 10 am every day?

  1. I usually get up at around 6:30 A.M., read or at least skim 150 – 200 e-mails (most from blogs that I follow), look at a dozen or so news sites, have a bit of breakfast, research a subject that I want to write about on my blog, maybe write and post or hold it until the next day, and then go to bed at about 8:30 P.M. Then, I read.

Since many of my posts remain reasonably active for days or even months, the time of posting does not appear to be significant as to readership.

  2. During the summer, I wake up around 10:00 AM! During the school year, I wake up around 8:00 or 8:30 AM. Speaking for myself, one of my favorite things about your blog is that new posts appear throughout the day. If I take a break or have lunch or need a moment to switch gears between different tasks, I know I can click on your blog and find a new interesting post or discussion. So for me, I love the posting throughout the day! But I don’t know if I represent a typical reader. 🙂

      1. That’s good to know because for me the main point of blogging is that I can post while I’m between meetings, classes, errands, etc as part of my mental hygiene. I vent and then feel better.

  3. I mostly read blogs in the evenings, after I come home. In the morning I am way too sleepy to do anything except get ready and run through the door (because I also sleep as long as possible and so I’m always in a hurry in the mornings, with no internet time before work). Sometimes I manage to check blogs during the day and, as Evelina says, I’m always happy to see a new post on your blog.

And, when I don’t have to go to work and can be in my own sleep rhythm I also sleep until 10am every day!

  4. I think people who want to read your posts will scroll down to see if they missed anything. People who only look at the most recent ones aren’t your main readers.

    1. I really want to believe that most of my readers read everything I write. It is a very comforting thought.

Still, the posts published at 6 am, always get 10 times more hits than any other posts. Even when these early posts are quite trivial.

  5. I read at all different times of the day. Depends what day and what’s going on. Sometimes I don’t have a chance to check in for a couple of days and then I’ll read lots of posts at once. I try only to comment from home, not from work, so sometimes I’ll skip a discussion when it seems like interest has waned by the time I have a chance to comments, and other days, like today, I’ll comment on multiple posts. 🙂

  6. As to when I read blogs, it sort of depends. On days I’m off of work, I do like to sit with my coffee and read them in the morning. However, on days when I do work, the whole thing has to wait until I get home from work — in which case, I usually look through all the titles in my reader and select the ones that seem most interesting.

As for waking up, I’m a 5am kind of person during the work week, which does not lend itself to sleeping much past 7am, even on the weekends.

  7. It depends on the day and the blog. I know you update multiple times a day, so even when it’s two in the morning and I’ve checked your blog throughout the day I’ll still check it in the hopes that you’ve posted something new. On weekends I try to limit my reading to the morning/early afternoon; on school days I check between 5:00pm and 10:00pm, and then intermittently as I do homework (more so once 1:00 hits).

Also, I’d love to be able to wake up at 10:00 every morning. That would be heaven. If I have an 8:30 class, I try to be up at 7:00. If I have a 1:00 class, I have to be up by 11:00, and if I have a 10:00 class I have to be up at 8:30 or 9:00. No alarm is set on Saturdays, but on Sundays I like to get up around 9:00 or 10:00.

    1. Well, when you become a professor, you will be able to tailor your own schedule and wake up when you want. 🙂

      1. It’s also generally around now when I start to wonder if I’m singlehandedly inflating your stats counter. My productivity dwindles proportionally with the rate at which caffeine leaves my system, so I find myself here more and more.

  8. I’m out of your time zone so it makes no difference to me when you post. I get notified in my email and if I can read I do, and if I can’t I don’t. 🙂

I don’t tend to read blogs at the weekend.

  9. I wake up anywhere from 6-7, read blogs at random times– some during the morning, some at night, sometimes during lunch (like now!). Mostly, I simply do not have the time to read blogs– so I tend to read a bunch in a chunk when I have free time, but no book or access to my video game.
