More from the Idiots Abound Series

God, people are stupid:

As a colleague recently put it, academia is ruthless in that good intention and effort count for next to nothing; output is where it’s at.

Yes, and life in general is very cruel to brown-eyed red-heads with freckles and a love for ice-cream and opera music: they always end up dying. Everybody else, on the other hand, goes on living forever.

  1. Maybe the uniqueness of academia is not being “results oriented,” but in expecting anything different. “What about all the articles I thought of writing but didn’t?” Why don’t those count? I’ve seen that attitude a lot in academia, even among colleagues excusing others their lack of publications.

  2. “So sad, about Wendy.”
“Yes, poor thing. She always did have a thing for Puccini.”
    “And ice cream!”
“The ushers kept telling her not to eat vanilla ice cream in our box. I never cared, because with that bloody cough, she only had a few months anyway”
“She could have lived much longer, you know.”
“But then she’d be around FOREVER. She was so…pedestrian. Stop your bloody tears, it’s embarrassing.”
“Can we go by the consumptive colony? For lunch and old time’s sake?”
    “Oh, why the hell not.”
