So who saw the State of the Union address? It was the best one in years. I totally loved it.
Good speech, good country, good people. I’m feeling very patriotic right now. Maybe I’ll put up the flag tomorrow.

I agree. It was the best SOU speech I can remember in my adult lifetime. And I’ve seen most of them since I turned 18! I even get a little teary eyed in spite of myself.

Surely you jest. I can remember Ike, okay as a child and adolescent, but still. Obama is the worst president that I have ever seen…as sleazy lying creep as Nixon and Clinton, and as cowardly politically correct and as weak as Jimmy Carter’s butt kissing.
Your country deserves a better leader. I have never seen your country so divided, and I witnessed the civil rights movement, the Vietnam war, and the feminist foolishness. Never have I seen so little hope and faith.
Remember that far too many decide how they stand by how they sit…and I am old enough to tell that this can all change, and rather quickly.

I think that people who are led by the brainless weasel Harper should be more modest about criticizing other people’s leaders. The address was phenomenal, the economy is booming, and the Canadian dollar is plummeting. Maybe Canadians should concentrate on why their currency is doing so poorly compared to ours.

@bg: Never seen our country so divided? Have you been to the US? The really sharp sharp divisions between parties/ factions in this country began under G.W. Bush (truly the worst president this country has ever seen.)
And the right is so rabid in this country that Obama has no chance at healing the divide. The Republicans entire agenda has been to discredit Obama. (And this isn’t me reading between the lines. It’s actually what they say.) Did you see Boehner’s facial expressions behind Obama? Obama says something mild like “all parents in this country should have access to high quality, affordable child care” and Boehner gets angry and refuses to clap. Truly: who can possibly object to high quality, affordable child care?
I honestly don’t understand your hysterical objections to Obama bg. To be honest, I’m really suspecting that your objections are racially motivated– though you won’t admit that to yourself. How is he a “lying creep?” Nixon broke the law in a spectacular way– Obama didn’t. And who is Obama “butt kissing?” What policy objections do you have?
I liked the speech last night as I said above. But I continue to have my problems with his policies (the Affordable Health Care act didn’t go far enough; I loathe his “college rating proposal;” I think we need more investment in our infrastructure; I want Gitmo closed etc. etc.) But despite my objections, I realize that by every imaginable measure, this country is in a better place than it was 6 years ago. It’s so patently obvious that it’s not even really up for debate. Do you think it was luck?

There’s simply no way Obama is objectively worse than Nixon, who is a study in bitter paranoia for his Watergate crimes, or Ford who decided that Nixon deserved a pardon for his crimes, or Shrub, who I blame entirely for not listening to intelligence reports that could have prevented 9/11,
or Reagan, who was so mendacious and/or stupid that his administration officials laundered arms and money in exchange for hostages to a country that the US was at war with and still is hostile towards — Iran.

I was only here for Bush Jr, but, seriously, is there a person here who’d prefer to live in the US of 2007 as opposed to the US of 2015? Seriously?
Let’s just all answer this question honestly and the worth of Obama will become very clear.

A measure of how old I am and how weak minded I once was…. I remember when I like Bush I. I hoped he would be the nominee in 1980 and was bitterly disappointed at his heel turn into Reagan’s running mate.
I had kind of liked Carter in 76 and may have voted for him, but he was a cooked goose by 1980 so I was hoping for a decent republican candidate instead of a walking mummy. IIRC I ended up voting for the Libertarian candidate in 1980 (my Ayn Rand fan days were over by then but the ashes weren’t cold.)

Wages haven’t increased much, it’s true. And that is the next hurdle to jump. But inflation/cost of living has remained fairly steady. So overall, it’s a wash. And the economy isn’t in free fall any longer. So we are still way way better off than 6 years ago. Truly bg, have you been to this country? I don’t mean that unkindly. It just seems like you don’t really any any understanding of the American socio-political situation.

I think of Clarissa as quite patriotic– especially considering that she’s not even a citizen. 🙂 Is it just me who thinks this?

Clarissas does say many very positive things about America and likes it a lot. However, for a speech to elicit strong feelings of “I love MY country and I’m going to put up the flag” in someone who has said before the only collective identity she likes is that of an immigrant and has discussed at length how the nation-state is an outmoded paradigm formed in part by strong myth making, it must be powerful. For something to elicit patriotism, there has to be a feeling of belonging and ownership associated with that country. 🙂

I’ve been paying taxes in this country since 2003. I believe I’ve bought myself both ownership and belonging aplenty. 🙂
The flag is obviously an ironic gesture on my part but it is true that I think this is a great country, a great project. I’m here by choice and not by accident and I have things to compare this country to. But I really love the idea of the world’s reject, unwanted anywhere else, kicked out of everywhere for being eternal malcontents, gathering and kicking everybody’s ass (metaphorically.)

This is why I resent the hell out of people who tell or imply to me I couldn’t possibly be from here or be a “real American” and I feel superior to them. I chose, they didn’t and I know more about this country than they’ve ever bothered to learn or could learn. This is why I DESPISE the hell out of McCain. The man had enough doubt about his own citizenship status that he consulted lawyers about it and some friendly colleagues adopted resolution that he is a natural born citizen but he encouraged every rabid-mouth breathing birther xenophobe racist ever.

The thing is, to these racists, everything that Obama says gets translated to “DIVISIVE!”
Say a few kind words about Trayvon or Michael Brown: DIVISIVE!
Say something about the harvard professor who was assaulted by the police for ‘breaking into’ his own goddamn house*: DIVISIVE!
*Note that this created such a furor that the President of the US of fucking A had to invite the asshole Police chief to the fucking white house for a ‘beer summit’ to patch things up. For the sin of saying a few trite words about racial profiling. And you wonder why he’s ‘aloof’. The most innocuous and obvious utterances which – said by anyone else would bore people to death – said by by him turn into PR nightmares.

I don’t feel I should vote in local or state elections since I don’t live there but have no objection to presidential elections since that can affect where I live.
The last time I actually did vote was 2004 (for Kerry). In 2008 and 12 I couldn’t vote for either candidate in good conscience and so I purposefully abstained. We’ll see how it goes in 2016…
