The UK’s political developments mimic the recent US history so closely that it’s like a bad joke. A gauche, uncharismatic woman who can’t say a word without annoying voters and a flamboyant Putinoid con artist who rides to power on a contrast between his cheap populism and her unvanquishable elitism.

Ossoff Lost
Sometimes, you repeat your own talking points so much that you start to believe them. Contrary to what we hear on TV and see in the papers, voters aren’t appalled by Trump any more than they were on the day they handed him the presidential victory. Nobody gives a flap about Comey or the Russians. Nobody – aside from those who thought this on November 8, of course – thinks that Trump’s presidency is a disaster. Many people think Trump is delivering for them.
The only way for Democrats to win is to stop running against Trump and start running on their own message. Of course, that requires coming up with one. For instance, it has become very clear that voters care about immigration. We can fret all we want about how crazy it is to care about immigration more than you do about your own health insurance, but you got to work with what you have. What’s the Democrats’ new message on immigration? Yesterday I linked an article that had some good ideas on the subject. I hope some of these ideas start appearing in the Dem nationwide platform.
Most importantly, the message of embracing losership, of “you didn’t build this”, of “privilege” needs to go. Many people perceive it as a weapon with which the rich and the mobile try to humiliate them. Remember how often Trump repeated the word “winning” in his campaign? It’s NLP, neurolinguistic programming. It’s something to look at and borrow.
A Smart Solution
One of Klara’s favorite games is identifying parts of the body. I say, “Klarochka, where are toes?” and she shows me her toes.
“Where are teeth?” and she touches her teeth.
Finally, I say, “Where are eyes?”
Of course, Klara is a smart baby and she doesn’t want to poke herself in the eye. She thinks about it for a second, pokes me in the eye, and announces, “Eyes!”
The Same
So remember the rapist in Berlin who raped a 13-year-old Russian immigrant girl and filmed the rape to use as blackmail? He was given a suspended sentence of one year and 9 months. Meaning, he won’t serve a day and is free to go rape some more kids.
I wish people kept this in mind whenever they start peeing themselves with delight over how very progressive Europe is compared to the supposedly backwards US. Shit’s the same everywhere.
Au Pair
A lady at the park asked me if I’m Klara’s babysitter. I neither dress not act youthful, so I’m thinking she must have thought I’m one of those foreign au pairs one sees in TV shows set in New York. It’s got to be the accent, right? Because there’s nothing else.
Potty Potheads
From an interesting article on immigration in The Atlantic:
In 2014, the University of California listed melting pot as a term it considered a “microaggression.”
Even for California it sounds deranged. Is it an urban myth of some sort?
Horrible Racists
One more quote from the article linked in the previous post:
By the spring of 2016, one top Clinton adviser explained to me, the campaign’s own polling showed that white voters without a college degree despised Clinton. The extent of their loathing was surprising—she polled far worse with them than Obama ever had, especially in states like Ohio and Iowa.
It’s because they are horrible racists, of course.
Apolitical Politics
It creeps me out when people discuss “the Resistance” as if it were real:
Leaderless and loud, the Resistance has become the motive power of the Democratic Party. Presidential hopefuls already strive to anticipate its wishes. Elected officials have restructured their political calculus to avoid getting on its wrong side. The feistiness and agitation of the moment are propelling the party to a new place.
Aside from a dwindling group of excitable folks posting silly things on FB and Twitter, there is zero evidence of political mobilization. If anything, people are getting less interested in politics because they see it as increasingly irrelevant.
For instance, it was very hard to get people to write a tiny paragraph for congressional hearings about the hardship our lack of state budget caused them. Curiously, the folks I see mentioning “Resistance” on FB did not participate at all yet they see themselves as more politically active as those of us who did.
I experience a sense of being in the presence of something surreal when the same person who begins every conversation with me by asking when I will “finally join the Resistance” refuses even to consider joining a real political effort. It’s as if posting crap on Facebook were suddenly a political act while working for the union or organizing for the next election weren’t.
The Life of a Linguist
This is the man who deciphered the Mayan script. His name is Yuri Knorozov. He didn’t have a place to live while he worked on this immense project, so he stayed in a small closet at a museum.
He was going to present his research at the defense of his Master’s thesis. There was every chance that he’d go straight to a concentration camp from the defense because Soviet orthodoxy held that there had been no pre-Columbian civilizations in the Americas. Knorozov’s research demonstrated that not only was the Mayan civilization real, it was also very sophisticated.
It took Knorozov under 5 minutes to deliver his findings. Instead of an MA, the committee unanimously awarded him a PhD. It was 1955, two years after Stalin’s death, and it was no longer as dangerous to challenge opinions on pre-Columbian times.
Knorozov’s life-long dream was to visit Mexico, but obviously he didn’t stand a chance of traveling anywhere while the USSR existed. He finally got a chance to see Mexico in 1990.
He died as he lived, abandoned and alone.
Good News About Russians
The good news about the Russian meddling in US politics and their infiltration of American media is that we’ve seen the worst. They can’t do any more damage than they’ve done already. There’s no way but uphill from here. And even if we decide to stick at the current place for a while, there’s no downward trajectory.
There isn’t much use talking about it now because what’s done is done. All there is right now is to be more vigilant with infected news sources. For instance, the Naked Capitalism website is still shilling for Putin openly and unrepentantly.
But once again, what we are seeing right now is the extent of Putin’s influence over the US politics and media.
