Reader Valter07 asked the following question about the current Ukraine-Russia conflict:
“And why have you chosen the pro-Ukrainian side of the conflict?”
If the roles were reversed, for instance: Russians rise against Putin, remove him from office, then Ukrainians under Yanukovich invade Russia and annex Belgorod, and there is an 86% of support for these activities in Ukraine – is there any doubt in anybody’s mind that I would refer to Ukrainians as anything but terrorists, animals, and a disgrace on humankind? If there is such a doubt, then I have to say, people, you are too weird.
If this scenario took place, I’d immediately choose a Russian flag as my Facebook avatar and start ranting against Ukrainians on the blog. And if that is not obvious, then I’m just weirded out completely. I don’t understand how a normal person with a functioning brain can not be appalled by these actions, irrespective of which side of which invented border they happened to be born.

Thank you, but I will poke you a bit further…. See, when you produced your mirror image of what is going on in Ukraine, you produced it not in vacuum, but reversing what you believe is actually going on in Ukraine. How did you decide what to believe about what is actually going on in Ukraine? How did you decide to believe some sources and not others? Why don’t you believe in US-backed fascist junta bent on genocide of Russian-speakers and not sufficiently pro-Western peaceful people of the East? We both know some people who honestly believe just that. So it is a proven fact a human being CAN sincerely believe that. Why don’t you?

I don’t believe this version because I’m not brain-dead. 🙂 But even if that version were 100% true, Id still not support Russia’s right to invade. I hate Putin and always did but if Ukrainians too weapons and crossed the border – to combat Putin, Nazis, religious freaks, anybody – I wouldn’t support that either. I can’t support anybody invading anybody else. I believe that this is the job for the UN, with all its flaws.
