One of the very few good things about Facebook is this group called “Soviet Art.” They never say anything, just share art from the Soviet era.
This is a painting by artist Ivan Vladimirov titled “Tsar’s Box at the Theater” (1918).
I’d love to know what they were watching.

The timing is all wrong by 16 years or so, but it’s nice to think it was the Shostakovich opera Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk and this is during the scene when Sergei rape-seduces Ekaterina (with some of the most sexually suggestive trombone slides in musical history).

I never heard the opera but I love the novel. One of the few worthwhile novels in the Russian language.
