A Stylish Infant

Of course, I need to agree upon the price with the nanny before she gets to see this baby’s wardrobe. The sight of tiny Calvin Klein, Yves Saint Laurent, Baby Gap, Mexx, Zara, etc. outfits, might lead her to conclude we are a lot wealthier than we are. And we didn’t even buy any of these beautiful clothes. They come from my very chic niece Klubnikis. People literally stop me in the street to say that they’ve never seen such a chic baby before in their lives.

Get Off My Lawn!

People will once again say I’m unfair to the young but it’s becoming clear it was a waste of time to give a chance to younger nannies. There is no planet on which a 23-year-old nanny should make 25% more than a tenured professor gets for a clearly much more qualified job. Fifty-year-old nannies with 30 years of experience and tons of references don’t expect anything in the vicinity of these insane salaries, of course.

Age and Phones

I wanted an older nanny (meaning, older than me.) I don’t have anything against young people but I work with 20-year-olds and I don’t want to feel like work continues at home. Also, 50+-year-old women don’t find it easy to get employed, so it’s important to give them a chance.

What I didn’t take into consideration, though, is that older people are into phones. And not in the comforting check-my-apps-and-text manner but in the creepy talk-into-them manner. And I’m not old enough to find this pastime entertaining.

Maybe I should hire a 20-year-old.

Furry Children

When a prospective nanny told us she has three furry children, N and I were stumped. I sincerely thought her children had a rare disability and felt compassion.

When I finally figured out (by means of a couple of Google searches) that furry children were pets, I realized I will not be able to work with this person. N still doesn’t believe furry children mean animals and thinks I’m calumnying the poor woman.

Cologne Continues

German police are investigating 26 reports of sexual assault that occurred at the Schlossgrabenfest music festival over the weekend in Darmstadt, Germany (near Frankfurt).

The incident is being described as a smaller scale repeat of the Cologne attacks on New Year’s Eve, wherein groups of men surrounded women in a coordinated way, ensuring women could not escape.Police say they have arrested three Pakistani men so far, two of which are asylum-seekers. The Cologne attacks, which produced over 1,000 reports of sexual assault, have not resulted in any sexual assault convictions. There have been, however, nine convictions for theft.

It’s one of those times when I don’t have much to add to the original piece. Everything has been said before without producing any impact.
